ROBERT LAWRENCE – With over twenty-five years of motion picture industry experience as an executive and producer, Robert Lawrence has worked on some of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful movies of the last two decades.
Lawrence produced the Paramount hit comedy Clueless starring Alicia Silverstone, and developed and executive produced Die Hard With A Vengeance. He also produced the Kelsey Grammar comedy Down Periscope, Rapid Fire, starring the late Brandon Lee, and A Kiss Before Dying, starring Matt Dillon and Sean Young.
Lawrence also produced Mozart and the Whale starring Josh Hartnett, The Last Castle, a military thriller starring Robert Redford, James Gandolfini and Mark Ruffalo; and Rock Star starring Mark Wahlberg and Jennifer Aniston.
Lawrence was previously a Producer/CEO at the Warner Bros. based Maysville Pictures, the company he started with George Clooney. Before turning to independent filmmaking, Lawrence was President of Production for United Artists, where he developed such projects as Presumed Innocent, The Prince of Tides, Mrs. Doubtfire, and Rainman, which grossed over $300 million and won seven Academy Awards.
At the time that Lawrence was brought into United Artists the company was the first major motion picture studio start-up in almost fifty years. Lawrence helped turn United Artists into a major supplier of motion pictures until it merged with MGM and was ultimately sold to Sony.
He joined U.A. in 1985 after serving five and a half years as Executive Vice President, Worldwide Production for Columbia Pictures. There he worked on films such as Ghostbusters, The Karate Kid, Tootsie, and Out Of Africa.
Lawrence started in the film industry in the Paramount story department and a year later joined the Robert Evans unit as a writer for whom he wrote a remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s “Notorious,” that got him meetings with the legendary director Orson Welles. Lawrence graduated with Honors from University of California, Berkeley and attended the M.F.A. screenwriting/directing program at University of California, Los Angeles. But his true passion for books and writing began as a child when he worked summers in The Roberts Book Company, his grandfather’s famous bookstore on Canal Street.
Among many other film and television projects in development, Lawrence is partnered with Showtime and Lionsgate Television on a cable series of Patrick Rothfuss’s critically acclaimed, best-selling The King Killer Chronicles; and a feature film with Lionsgate Films of the same property. He is producing both projects with Lin-Manuel Miranda (In the Heights, Hamilton), who is also composing the music.
He is also currently developing a television remake of his hit film Clueless with CBS Studios; and We’re Family, an original unscripted series, with Lionsgate Television.
